Mentors meet with their mentees for a minimum of one hour, once a week during the school day, at our mentor centers on the school campuses. These centers are overseen by our School Site Coordinators and offer activities that help to build trusting relationships between our mentors and mentees. Activities include playing board games, tackling puzzles, helping with school work, playing sports, or just hanging out together. Mentors and mentees can eventually meet off campus, too. Through initiatives, such as our 100 Active Kids Project, we offer opportunities for mentorships to meet in the community. We may provide movie and pool passes, a wide variety of gift cards to local bookstores, restaurants and businesses, and community service opportunities through our non profit partners.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mentor Me adapted to support both in person and virtual mentorships. Our mentors have truly stepped up and have been super creative in connecting with their mentees, including snail mail, phone calls, and even baked goods. Yum! We match mentees and mentors via Zoom! On a programmatic level, we provide Virtual Mentoring Ideas on a monthly basis. Our staff have shared a bit of their passions and have created succulent and origami kits, whereby mentors and mentees can do these activities together virtually. Our Virtual MentorRoundtables have enabled us to provide a continued space for mentors to share challenges and best practices. Our School Site Coordinators have been at the center of ensuring families, mentors, mentees, and schools continue to come together in partnership.

We also operate the Mentor Me Cavanagh Recreation Center, our recently remodeled 12,000 sq. ft. facility where many of our mentorships meet during and after school. The center includes a Student Lounge, Art Room, Cafe, and a Game Room complete with a piano, billiards, air hockey, ping pong and foosball tables. We also have a full-sized gym equipped for basketball, volleyball and soccer. A community pool is located next door. The center also provides homework help, college counseling, enrichment classes and other essential services for our mentees and their families.

In addition to submitting an application, 3 references, and receiving fingerprint clearance, mentors are provided with training and receive support throughout the year from their School Site Coordinators, program staff, and via our Learning Space opportunities. These include our monthly Mentor Roundtable support group, special events and a wealth of offerings from our community partners.

If you would like to learn more and speak with staff, please let us know. Questions may be directed to mentorme@petalumapeople.org or 707-765-8488 ext 108.

Thank you and we look forward to connecting with you to support our young people in achieving their highest potential!
